Major Project 4: Progress Report Sherell Morgan University of Houston Downtown TCOM 3302: Business and Technical Report Writing Prof. Dr. Ashleigh Petts11th January 2023 Progress Report To: Dr. PettsFrom: Sherell Morgan Date: January 11th, 2023 Subject: Progress Report for the Study on Overheating in households during summer ? Purpose: This is the progress report of my study on the issue of harmful impacts due to indoor overheating in the summer. Introduction: The issue of indoor heating has been around for several years now. The problem has particularly been rising recently, with climate change being a significant driver. In cities, the issue takes particular precedence as the style of living varies considerably. With more and more people migrating towards cities, the overall capacity of cities themselves has begun to diminish. The excessively high rates of pollution, high emissions, and excessive use of non-renewable resources are some of the main reasons behind this change in the cities. In other words, the cities are suffocated and, in turn, are turning into suffocating systems. Not surprisingly, the impacts have been taken indoors. While it is hot in the summer, several factors make cities challenging to live in.? The risk is high, especially in the case of houses constructed some years ago, as the building nature may not be as equipped to handle the temperature changes. Further, the risk is exceptionally high in the case of elderly residents and children. Increased global warming is making staying indoors harder for all age groups.? While the issue cannot be entirely eradicated, it can be minimized by adequate intervention. Overheating can also be tackled by taking up minor changes in the indoor styles that do not impose any interruptions to everyday life. Overheating can be minimized by combining technological variations in the building and being mindful of what causes the problem. Work completed: In this section, I will present the progress starting from the first phase of the proposal, the subsequent stage of research up till the study of the solutions.? Task 1: Topic Selection/Approval:?The topic was selected guided by problems that can be solved technologically, which the professor approved. ? Task 2: Plan of work:?In this task, I created a plan of work by determining the purpose, audience, and general work methodology. Task 3: Proposal Draft:?The proposal draft contained the general plan of the process of making the recommendation report. I used the feedback on the possible audience to improve the proposal. Task 4: Final Proposal:?The updated proposal was submitted, and the feedback has been used as a guide to proceed to the next phase. Task 5: Research:?In this phase, I delved deeper into the issue to obtain answers on specific areas of the problem. This was done before studying the possible solutions that can be suitable to the target audience. The same was used to form the initial sections of the recommendation report draft.? The topics researched were: Overheating cases in Houston, extent and possible impacts Impact of excessive indoor heat on cooling and energy consumption Types of housing and household types in Houston Task 6: Recommendation Report outline:?After obtaining an idea of the problem, I proceeded to research the potential solutions for the issue. This helped me draft an outline of the recommendation report.? Task 7: Progress Report:?In this phase, the progress report preparation focused on summarizing the results of the research as well as providing an overall idea of workflow. Work remaining: Task 8: Recommendation Report Presentation: The presentation will include the following: Summary of the problem identified Summary of recommendations Conclusion Task 9: Recommendation Report:?I am still in the process of studying the possible means to implement viable solutions to overheating. I have made steady progress on the research in the first half of the report. The task of compiling the report and finalizing the solution recommendation section is what I will be focusing on, after which I can complete the job within schedule.
