Question.3858 - Purpose--Why do this? This assignment is designed to prepare you for our culminating Argument Synthesis Research Inquiry assignment. In order to prepare you for the larger research inquiry assignment, you will be asked to complete several smaller assignments that will take you through the research process step-by-step.  Instructions--How do I do this? For each of these Research Assignments (1-4), you will research, read, and create annotated entries for two sources that you might use in your research inquiry assignment.  Each of these research assignments will eventually become part of your annotated bibliography. *As a reminder, your annotated bibliography will include ten credible sources (if your grade goal is an "A"--other grade goals require fewer sources) that you find in the course of researching your inquiry question. Remember to carefully evaluate each source. At least four of your annotated bibliography sources must be fairly current (2015 or later) books or articles from a scholarly journal. Good sources include the following—but be aware of possible bias in all of these. Remember that popular books, magazines, and newspapers are publishing to attract readers and sell their products.  Books Scholarly journals (preferably peer-reviewed) Some websites (.gov or .edu) Newspapers (San Francisco Chronicle, New York Times, etc.) Reputable magazines (Time, Newsweek, etc.) At the top of each writing assignment give your inquiry question under the following heading in bold: Inquiry Question:  Put the inquiry question you are researching here Do each source separately, in alphabetical order according to the citation (author’s last name). Use the following bold labels in the following order, as shown below. Please use Reading Rhetorically to help you thoroughly analyze your source in each of the following categories. Citation: Use MLA style citation format with a hanging indent, just as it will appear in your works cited page later. Be sure to include a URL, so I can easily check your source. Start on the line below the heading (Citation), so the author's last name is the first thing in the hanging indent. Refer to "introduction to MLA format and citation" in Week 9 Module for help with this. You can also get help from the WLDC, me, and/or a librarian. Genre: Give the genre (type of source). E.g., Scholarly journal article, opinion page of the newspaper etc.…. Purpose: Why is the author writing this? To persuade? Inform? Entertain? Some combination? Audience: Who is the author’s intended audience? Summary:   Write a summary of Author’s key ideas--use what we learned about summary in Writing Assignments 1-3 to help you with this part. What is the author arguing? Or informing? Author authority (ethos): Examine the author’s credibility--use Informed Arguments Ch 6 to help you think through this. Publisher or Sponsor authority (ethos): How credible is the publisher or sponsor? How do you know? You may need to do a bit of investigating here. Try finding the publisher or sponsor's web site.
