Poverty in US Vs. in other countries The condition or rather a state in which a human being is deprived of basic necessity for living is known as poverty. For example if a person has no money or very little so as to he is unable to posses materials which are necessary for him meet his daily needs, then he lives in the state of poverty. Indeed, Poverty is a state of privation. There are various reasons which give rise to poverty, like social, political, economical and environmental. Inflation and illiteracy also give rise to poverty. Poverty has engulfed a large part of the world. There are millions and billions of people who are poverty stricken. Still in this developing 'IT' age, where the whole world is like a global village, many people are deprived of what they basically need to survive. Still people go hungry to bed, still they don't get required medical facility and many more. Poverty is just not limited to poor country or the developing counties, it has even effected the most developed nations and the nations with one of the highest GDP. Taking into consideration, a country like USA has also been effected by poverty. Since the mid 1960,s US has seen a tremendous rise in the poverty line leaving about twenty percent of the children poor and helpless. According to US government, poverty is based on the total income received like in 2012 the poverty level was about $23,000 annually for a family of four members. It was concluded that about fifty eight percent of Americans has at least spend one year below poverty line at some point between ages twenty five and seventy five. Generally poverty rates are higher in cities and urban areas than in sub urban areas. 3 | Page Poverty in US Vs. in other countries According to US Census Bureau, in November 2012, more than sixteen percent of population lives in poverty which includes almost twenty percent children. In and around 2008 and 2009 conditions were no good, about one and half million people of US used emergency shelter i.e. housing program. According to the latest survey conducted by the Census Bureau, figures released in September 2012 reveals that record high numbers of people are continuing to live in poverty in United States. From the data by Census it was concluded that there is still one out of seven people living below poverty line and one in sixteen people lives in utter or deep poverty. The reports also said that forty six million in US are poverty stricken. In short, during 2011 around nineteen million of non-Hispanics lived in poverty and ten million people lived in deep poverty. Out of total Hispanics, thirteen million people lived in poverty and more than ten million lived in deep poverty. Whereas poverty in other nations are even at worse condition. Many countries in Africa are at such condition that the people here live in so extreme poverty. Also, people here live on single dollars a day or sometimes even lesser. In fact among 50 most poorest countries in the world, most of them are from Africa and the Middle East. In India, poverty is widespread. It has almost one third of the world's total poor. According to the reports of the World Bank, thirty two percent of India's total population i.e. about four hundred million people, compared to that of forty six million people of US, live below international poverty line. In fact some states in India are even poorer than many other states of Africa. Also, according to the 2011 poverty Development Goals Report, three hundred million people in India and China are expected to come out of extreme poverty which is not that in case of America. Well, taking about Asian countries where two thirds of the total world's population lives, almost nine hundred twenty million people lives below poverty line(World Bank Resource). Poverty is a massive problem of Countries in Asia. Also, here 4 | Page Poverty in US Vs. in other countries poverty is mainly in the suburban areas unlikely that in America where poverty is more prone to rural areas and cities. America is one of the wealthiest nation of the world and the fact that population is here is so high is ironical. USA's poverty rate is actually embarrassing compared to the other richer nations of the world. It should also be noted that when it comes to comparison of childhood poverty between America and other nations, it is shameful for American to know that they have childhood poverty rate much higher than other richer countries. And sarcastically, since 90's government has been improving in the on childhood poverty rate, nearly about 2.5%. Like other countries American government too has made many efforts to combat poverty rate. In 1964, president Johnson declared war on poverty. Since then, about seven trillion dollars are spent on this war. So far not so much of improvement has been shown but still the government is trying to eradicate the roots of poverty from its country. 5 | Page Poverty in US Vs. in other countries Work cited: Albeda & Pearl Randy & Withon Ann,(2002)," Lost Ground: Welfare Reform, Poverty and Beyond".
