Question.1992 - You will need to watch the debate between IDebate Rwanda and USC before completing this discussion. Don’t base your decision on external factors, instead, consider what was actually said in the debate. 1. Make a decision: As we’ve discussed, debate is a way to make a decision about what should or should not be done. In this situation, the debaters are asking their audience to make a decision on whether or not genocide education should be mandatory in all US high schools. So, write a 5 to 7- sentence paragraph that: A. Begins by giving a yes or no. (A “yes as long as...” or “no, if it includes...” is fine). This should be written as a claim and a reason. B. Refers to the most persuasive reason given by the team you agreed with. Explain why this is a persuasive reason to you. What evidence is present? How does it speak to your values? C. What do you think the best point was by the other team? Why did this reason not persuade you? D. Optional: any other comments you’d like to make about the debate or the topic.
Answer Below:
Yes, given the present situation of the USA which is predominated by divisionism, polarization and discrimination, genocide education should be made compulsory in US high schools. There are growing incidences of divisionism dominated by speech against women and minority groups. The proof of discriminatory policies of the country is reflected in the discriminatory rules established against sexual and minority groups. As such the country is halfway through genocide. Therefore in order to prevent this condition from happening education about genocide should be made compulsory. The most persuasive reason given by the team who spoke in favor of the statement is that people are basically ignorant of the issue of genocide. The evidence can be seen in the case of Rwanda where there was genocide against the Tutsi but America, being ignorant thought of this situation as war and withdrew their military forces instead of intervening in the issue. So the subject of genocide should be incorporated into the education system in order to make the children aware of the genocide and pre conditions that give rise to it (iDebate Rwanda, 2023). It speaks to the personal values of self-awareness that every citizen should have. The best point that was reflected by the other team is that many educators are not aware of the incidents of the genocide therefore if they are forced to talk about it then they can provide false information. However, though true this cannot be a reason to keep aside such an important issue of genocide. Instead, it should be incorporated into the study course of high schools. References iDebate Rwanda.
