Additionally, in our changing society, we are learning how to interact with people who culturally have different beliefs, values, and attitudes. For the initial post, address the following questions. Use the provided headings, and, under each heading, answer the question in a full paragraph. Please use your textbook and an outside scholarly source in your post, and make sure you cite both sources using APA formatting. Scenario Think of a time when you interacted with someone from a different culture. Using the communication model, how did your conversation evolve? Was there a miscommunication? Perception How can our understanding of perception help us become more effective communicators? Change What could you have done differently? References Place your two APA references in this section. Follow-up Post Instructions Respond to at least one peer or the instructor. Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification. Writing Requirements Minimum of 2 posts (1 initial & 1 follow-up) Minimum of 2 sources cited (assigned readings/online lessons and an outside scholarly source) APA format for in-text citations and list of references
Answer Below:
Week 1 Discussion-Perception Scenario: Think of a time when you interacted with someone from a different culture. Using the communication model, how did your conversation evolve? Was there a miscommunication? I have work in the NICU department for seven years now. We have different cultural patients, I'm fluent in Spanish and English and I can translate for the most part when needed. There was one time when a couples baby was admitted, the baby was a premature baby. The family did not speak English nor Spanish. The lady looked like she was from the middle east. She wanted her baby to be fed only breastmilk. This was her first baby and she didn't know how to pump. Nurse techs help moms pump and we have to explain to them but because of the communication it was very hard for me to explain. I didn't understand her and she didn't understand me. I had to use my hands and show her, but like if I was doing it to myself. It was very uncomfortable but at the end she was able to understand what I was trying to explain to her. Perception: How can our understanding of perception help us become more effective communicators? The most important thing about communication is to do it with respect, there are many people who have other type of customs. For example, I realize that the lady custom was to cover her hair and that she couldn't be close to other men due to her customs. For me that's something I respect a lot because those are their customs and their traditions. Change: What could you have done differently? I would have called a hospital translator so the patient can fully understand what we are talking about. I would have also use privacy screens for mothers who are pumping or breastfeeding their babies. References: Joseph, S. &Nagmabadi, A. (2003). Encyclopedia Of Women & Islamic Cultures.
