I have chosen the topic: Do authoritarian or democratic countries handle pandemics better? It has been seen that China has emerged as a winner in handling the pandemic due to its authoritarian nature. One of the major advantages which China has over other countries is the trust and faith of its population. The population of China emerged very strong during the entire pandemic. Due to the trust factor, the lockdown declared in China proved to be a successful one. During the times of pandemic, the government should be competent enough in the areas of health and communication. It is surprising to know that a lower middle-income country like Vietnam was able to pull off the pandemic in a very strategic manner because of its population which is very well-educated and doesn’t rely on the average healthcare system. They believe in having a proper healthcare system. The U.S. government did not take the pandemic seriously and rather they made it political propaganda which resulted in the widespread of the pandemic in their country. In comparison, to the wealth of the company, the U.S. government could not handle the pandemic in a strategic manner. Authoritarian countries like Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, etc. immediately started conducting tests as soon as the virus started spreading. These countries had proper laws in place and they were heavily dependent on the lockdown to curb the spread of the virus. The authoritarian countries had an aggressive approach toward the pandemic. There levied strict laws against the pandemic. If anyone was caught breaking the law, would be penalized heavily. These countries took advantage of their high authoritarian capacity and were successful in controlling the virus to a great extent. If we compare the democratic and authoritarian countries in handling the pandemics, we can definitely say those authoritarian countries performed better than the democratic countries. Even though there have been different pros and cons in their approach but the authoritarian countries have been more serious about the pandemic and they have implemented early measures in order to curb the pandemic. We can also see that many developed democratic countries failed to achieve control over the virus. On the other hand, authoritarian countries had a well-managed communication system and educated population which helped to overcome the pandemic in a smooth manner. Without the belief of the population in their government, it would not have been possible for them to succeed (Kleinfeld, 2020). References Kleinfeld, R. (2020, March 31).
