Milgram’s Study Zimbardo’s Study The five core ethical principles of the APA’s code of ethics are given below with a brief description of each. Respect for Persons. Psychologists allow participants the right to choose whether to participate. They also present all the information up-front before the participant starts. Psychologists don’t coerce participants into participating or continuing in the experiment. Beneficence (No Harm). Psychologists take reasonable steps to avoid physically and psychologically harming their research participants and to minimize harm where it is foreseeable and unavoidable. Justice. In research, the risks should be held by approximately the same people who will reap the rewards. Fidelity and Responsibility. A researcher must take responsibility for their actions when performing research. If there is blame for a bad decision, the researcher accepts that blame. They also don’t conduct a study involving deception unless they have determined that the use of deceptive techniques is justified by the study’s prospective scientific, educational, or applied value and when other non-deceptive alternatives are not feasible. Integrity. Researchers must not fabricate data or try statistical techniques that are questionable. Their actions should reflect the dignity of the position they hold when it comes to reporting information, including unfavorable results.
