Question.3661 - Post your explanation of: The difference between collecting data using individual interviews and a focus group (e.g., intent, selecting participants, conducting the interview or focus group) Given the topic you are currently using for your research, would you consider using a focus group for your study? Why or why not? Be sure to support your main post and response post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA style.
Answer Below:
Individual Interview vs Focus Group In order to collect the qualitative data, individual interviews, and focus groups could offer distinct approaches based on the research intent and the desired depth of insights on the research topic. The intent behind individual interviews has been to gather in-depth based on the personal insights of participants (Saldaña, 2021). On the other hand, focus groups gather diverse perspectives on a topic by fostering group interaction. Apart from this, participant selection for individual interviews has been based on the research topic; however, participants selected for focus groups represented a broader range of experiences and the group has been typically made up of 6-10 individuals. According to Ravitch & Carl (2021), focus groups could be applied to evaluating knowledge and ideas developed and constructed between culturally similar groups; whereas, individual interviews have been used to gain information and how people view the world suggesting relativist ontology constructed based on the human mind and individual experiences forming perceptions and influence their attitudes. Use of Focus Group in Current Research My topic has been “Impact of MBI on Counselor Burnout” which focuses on the individual counselors’ experiences with burnout and how the mindfulness-based interventions have been influencing this. On the contrary, applying individual interviews would allow for a deeper personal experience exploration, which could be sensitive and unique to each individual. Counselors who have been discussing burnout may feel comfortable sharing openly about their setting, without the potential influence or peers' judgment could be only possible in a focus group. However, individual interviews would provide a more detailed understanding of counselor perception of MBI on their well-being providing only personal context that may vary with every individual.
