Question.4043 - To prepare for this Journal: Read about using reflective journaling in the article by Ortlipp (2008), found in this week’s Learning Resources. Reflect on the following statement as a broad consideration for social change as a research lens: Rapid social change and the resulting diversification of life worlds are increasingly confronting social researcher with new social contexts and perspectives…thus research is increasingly forced to make use of inductive strategies instead of starting from theories and testing them…knowledge and practice are studied as local knowledge and practice. (Flick, 2002, p. 2) Consider your intrinsic motivation for pursuing your chosen research topic. In other words, ask yourself why you have chosen to pursue this topic. Consider how your intrinsic motivation aligns with Walden’s mission of social change. In other words, to what social change do you hope the results of your study will contribute? As you consider this, recall the following directive: Think globally, act locally! Consider if there is anything else you would like to reflect on in this video journal entry. By Day 4 Record a brief (5-minute maximum) autobiographical video using the Kaltura Webcam recording option. In your video journal, introduce yourself to your classmates and share your thoughts based on your considerations of the five points you explored to prepare for this journal. Answer Below:

Hello Everyone, this week's journal reflection has been based on the article “Keeping and using Reflective Journals in the Qualitative Research Process” by Michelle Ortlipp published in 2008. In nexus with this, the article clearly isolated the problem of bias in qualitative research particularly that has been still debated in methodology texts and there has been a lack of agreement on how much researcher influence needs to be accepted or controlled and how it might be accounted for. Similarly, this type of reflective journaling allows the researchers in order to document their thoughts, emotions, and evolving perspectives, especially in rapidly changing social contexts. On the other hand, Flick (2002) suggested that rapid social change and how the diversification of life worlds have increasingly confronted social researcher with new social contexts and perspectives. Hence, for this instance, I focused on the current increasing issue of how social media has been affecting the mental health conditions and self-efficiency of adolescents. Furthermore, certain local issues where increasing anxiety situations, depression rates among adolescents, and many other factors occurring locally draw my attention in evaluating and understanding the state of effects of social media on adolescents. Similarly, Walden’s mission of social change has been based on providing a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform. Thus, my reflective journaling and methods would focus on isolating such biases that may affect the overall reporting and even the social change approach. In consideration of this, local issues are especially related to understanding the state of counseling among adolescents and considering a global aspect of how social media has been affecting the global scenario such as increasing the health impacts of adolescents. These purposes have been clearly isolated and could be applied in the Think Globally, Act Globally directive where understanding the mental health scenario of adolescents may progress in better evaluation of the global health condition and developing similar guidelines for global contact.  Hence, I would like to conclude with this fact, as a social change agent, I need to consider the health condition of individual and society where various factors and actions have been affecting the social act.
