Coping Strategies Today the main problem for a person is how to cope up with this fast running life which on failure creates stress in our mind leading to various problems. Stress is unpredictable and can enter into our life because of any event or any disturbance in our lifestyle which result in tension between each other. This tension is first seen in family atmosphere which indicates that there is a need for change in relationships and family environment. For coping up with this type of situation it is very important that coping strategies should be implemented in a family environment which will help us to reduce the level of stress. In this essay we will be discussing about how some families used coping strategies to reduce the stress level. Before going towards it we have to understand about what factors the coping capability of any family lies does. It is very important to find out that previously how much stress is faced, how much support is available from internal and external sources and family’s ability to cope up with new situation etc. Coping strategies consist of three levels - First level says that change or adapt the existing rules, ways of doing things and rearranging responsibilities to cope up. We have seen in many families that they mainly look after by man power and woman does not have a role in it. Man is head of the family and that the older one. External and internal decisions are taken by that one person only. Thus this brings a stress level where each and every one has to wait for the decision taken by that single person on each and every issue which sometimes lead to unwanted loss or situation. Thus nowadays in some families equal opportunities are given to each and every member of the family rather being focused on one. It is possible that decisions should be taken by communicating each other and on advice of each other but at least they can be timely taken and don’t have to wait for one person to take it. Secondly with the coming new generation elder people started listening to them as they think that their children have more knowledge of new systems thus giving new rays to life. Second Level of coping strategies says that change metarules so that new areas of rules can be created to reduce stress. As I have mentioned above that woman does not have a say in the family and does not have any connection with financial matters and with the outer world, this obviously bring a big amount of stress on man especially in single families as the man of the family cannot be everywhere every time. Thus nowadays we can see women sharing the responsibilities sharing their shoulders in every field. Where there is a rule that women will not go outside and work there we have seen that many women are working from home and earning decent incomes and performing all other responsibilities like handling all affairs of their children like their school, homework, playing etc. They are stepping outside of the home to bring household items. Thus opening new areas of rules that man will do the job and support family by working outside and will not interfere with household activities completed by the woman. Third level of coping strategies says that basic assumption toward life should be change and value structure to be reordered. As we have mentioned the situation above about life of people in this level the basic assumption has totally changed. Here there is no difference in man or woman and they both share the outside and inside the home responsibilities together thus reducing the stress level. Basic assumptions toward life are changed with the span of time and one has power and valid reason to express his/her views in front of the family. The confidence to do this comes after receiving education, exploring the world and understanding the need of to today’s life. For example in many families we can see that old customs, rituals, and thinking are changed and older people are also happy with that. This is because they have understood the need of today and have confidence on their upcoming generations. Communication is also a main part of coping strategies. Before people do not use to talk each other on every topic. They follow the same pattern which their family is following and agree on decision of elder person whether right or wrong, but now some families use direst talk to explore more options to resolve the problem, express their feelings which in result reduce tension. On the other hand some families use nonverbal method of communication so that they can tell their feeling without hurting the sentiments of other on their face and by not getting into any burning issues or quarrel. Thus we can say that coping strategies are effective when properly conceptualized and time is given to bring change in life of people. It is not every time possible that strategy work as soon as implemented. Sometime it fails, sometimes half work is done but to reduce stress you need to work on it and give time to adapt new change. It was also found that these levels differ from each other as in first level it just changing a part of life to reduce stress while in second level keeping the view of rules set new areas of rules are originated from those old one. And finally third level totally changes the main headline of life thus giving the new face of life. It is also seen that level change time vary from family to family as we do not know that which stress will be in need of which change thus which level be applied at that time. It depends on events that which stage last to what time. It may be a few months or maybe years. Time also depend on education of family members, their ability to accept change, social support to go under change etc. Thus if you want to be in this world and move according to it you have to work on yourself to run in this race and for this coping strategies are very useful and effective.
