Question.1866 -   For your initial post, answer the following prompts:   Social psychology is a science and relies on the scientific method in research. Describe each type of research method (experimental or correlational) and expand on the advantages and disadvantages of each approach (see Figure 6). If you were doing a research study, which method would you use and why?

Answer Below:

There are three popular approaches used to conduct research in the social psychology field - the observational approach, the correlational approach, and the experimental approach. Experimental research is a controlled approach wherein the researcher manipulates on variable to study the impact it makes on the other variable. An advantage of the method is that it can be used along with other research methods and its process is a well-structured. The research approach provides specific conclusions. On the con side, it is highly prone to human error as implementing control over extraneous variables may lead to personal bias. It is also time consuming and expensive. In observational research methods, the researcher observes the participants and the phenomena in a natural environment. The research approach is faster and inexpensive and easy to conduct. However, it is difficult to control the variables as it is conducted in a natural setting. Also, it is time consuming. The correlational research method explores relationships between variables without the researcher controlling either of them. The research method enables the researcher to collect more data compared to the experimental method. Further, it also facilitates the opportunity of conducting further research to other scholars. On the cons side, it is time consuming and does not reveal the reason behind the relationships between variables. Given a choice, I would use the correlational research method as it facilitates the collection of much more data compared to other type of methods and also opens the door to further research studies.
