In a capitalist economy, education is often seen as a commodity, and the cost of education can be high. This can lead to financial barriers for many students, resulting in a lower quality of education and a negative impact on their learning experience (The Anarchist Library, 2017). In contrast, in a social democratic system, equal access to education is emphasized, resulting in higher pass rates and effective learning. The education costs in the United States have been a major concern for many students and families. A college education can now be considered the second-largest expense that every individual who attends institutions will pay in their entire life (Dierdorff, 2023). This high cost of education can lead to students involved in considerable debt, which can impact their ability to fully participate in their studies, leading to a decline in their academic performance. As a result, some students may be unable to pursue higher education due to financial barriers. Another study found that higher student debt is associated with lower homeownership rates, delayed household formation, and lower credit scores. A study found that students who took out loans to pay for college had lower grades and were less likely to complete their degrees than students who did not take out loans. The study also found that the negative impact of student debt on academic performance was more significant for low-income students (Gicheva et al., 2013).
