Question.3361 - After you get your readings and video-watching finished this week, peruse the Internet for a news article or research institute publication with a graph or two. Copy and paste one graph into the discussion board. Remember to fully cite your sources. What is the measure they use for each variable in the graph (i.e., ordinal, nominal, or interval/ratio)? What is helpful about the graph? What might be improved? Is anything misleading? Is the presentation of the graph in the best format (i.e., pie chart, histogram)? Note: according to your readings, some formats are preferred for different measures of data. For example, a histogram is used for interval/ratio data.

Answer Below:

The graph uses nominal variables for each variable. The mental health condition of children is categorized based on three factors: anxiety, depression, and Behavior disorders (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023). These variables are nominal, and these factors can be arranged in any order. Age - group is an ordinal variable. It provides the range of age of children in each category. Ordinal variables are arranged in an order only. The graph compares the ratio of different mental health conditions across different age groups (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023). The bar graph can be improved by reducing the colors. Since all three mental conditions are in the same age group, we can use only three colours. For instance, for the age group between 3 and 5, we can use red; for 6-11, we can use orange; and for 12-17, we can use pink. On the x-axis, we can only write the different age groups, and on the y-axis, we can represent the numbers as percentages. The different mental health conditions can be differentiated using three different colors, and we can label the colours in the top-right corner of the graph. The graph is misleading because the age group and the categories of mental health conditions are on the x-axis. Also, the y-axis is not labelled. Only 12 are represented in percentages, and the rest are in numbers. The title of the graph is also not appropriate. It could be said that the percentage of children affected by different mental health conditions by age group. We can use a bar chart or a pie chart for nominal or ordinal variables; yes, it is in the best format. References Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
