Chapter 13 Corman Faculty Lecture Short Paper Vivian Angelica Barajas The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Arizona State University COM 100: Introduction to Human Communication Professor Diane DiMiceli February 17th, 2024 Chapter 13 Corman Faculty Lecture Short Paper Video Summary Dr. Corman's video lecture tends to emphasize mass media convergence to social media, with a brief history of how the transition occurred, starting from the mid-20th century, wherein the information across the world flew only through radio, new paper, and news broadcast channels - that gave the advantage of setting public agenda, the choice of information conveyed to the people was pretty much controlled (Corman, n.d.). As the internet came along, social media was established that gave people the ability to communicate directly with each other without the paper being involved, wherein news was starting to take streaming online, giving people the authority to choose what news they wanted to listen to, and also the ability to distribute information was given to everyone, anyone with the appropriate skill to use a computer was able to spread a piece of information (Corman, n.d.). At present, newspaper companies and news channels have their own YouTube channels, and podcasts have replaced the practice of radio, including politicians and celebrities, who tend to communicate directly with the intended audiences through social media. The discussed transition is referred to as media convergence, merging static media flow with advanced digital platforms - as Dr. Corman describes: What was once a fairly well-regulated information space is now essentially the Wild West; anybody can put whatever message they want and transmit it to a lot of people due to the potential it has in terms of spreading false information that could be widespread and perceived by the masses without critical thinking, it has the power to drive the political understanding of people who are exposed to social media. The convergence of mass media to social media could be seen as a single entity due to the unregulated converged media since several users have the ability to spread lies either to gain popularity or control the perception of the social media audience. The way forward would be awareness in order to spot, disregard, and understand social responsibility by not spreading disinformation. Connection between Video and Chapter Reading In accordance with the learnings from Chapter 13, the video lecture interrelates to the dangers faced by the mass media, as the chapter gives emphasis on how it could influence the perception of the masses, the blended emergence of technology and mass media with increased change in ownership, dynamic shift in the viewing habits of the target audiences, how social media interactive youth tend to serve as the basis for market drivers and how it impacts their family dynamics could be some of the relatable topics that can be explored (Albers et al., 2021). Also, how mass media is forced to inevitably shift towards running their content online, considering various models of media that are linear models depicting how mass media messages are created, disseminated, and received by audiences. Some of the observations are: - that transparency can be achieved; although mass media companies are business-driven and ensure to produce or provide content that drives their target audiences, the exposure and choices available to the masses are vast and hampers the influence media could have on social identities, unlike before people have access to all the information, media's role in shaping understanding of the world and agenda-setting capacity is at stake, including the monitoring of media violence, and the analysis of media economics that anyone can do with access to the internet and social media (Albers et al., 2021). However, it also involves various ethical concerns, such as the unregulated flow of information by using any social media platform; it could even lead to media activism, impact on children with several possibilities, avoiding distortions or stereotypes, structural issues in media industries, and promoting alternative views that could stir up increased societal tension; for instance, when people wanting to read the news that aligns within the scope of only their interest, it could lead to reinforcing their preconceptions rather than building an inclusive or open-minded society. Chapter 13 also discusses the way forward, recommending that consumers make effective, ethical choices in choosing the media with the intent of broadening the horizon of diversity knowledge and questioning content and framing while being attentive to ethical implications. Although this convergence is inevitable, people should be made aware of some of the possible consequences that could arise, which are - increased vulnerability due to cyberbullying since the online platform provides anonymity, poor credibility of the information put across, addiction to a quick feed of information that could hamper critical thinking ability and also increased reliance on digital connectivity, self-esteem issues - wherein due to cinematic or exaggerated portrayal of reality could lead to a habit of being comparison causing dissatisfaction and impacting mental health and more; which demand a need public awareness across various schools and universities in terms of what and how to perceive from the online mass media.?
