Question.820 - Power and politics are inevitable in teams. Consider your Pacific team or a current or previous team in which you have participated. If your last name begins with A through L, discuss the positive role power and politics can play within a team.  If your last name begins with M through Z, discuss the negative role power and politics can play within a team.  How do these roles impact ethics?  In your responses to your peers, reflect on experiences you’ve had with power, politics, and ethics on teams.

Answer Below:

In a previous team I participated, power and politics played a positive role in creating a clear sense of leadership and direction, facilitating decision-making, and resolving conflicts. According to Robbins and Judge (2017), power is the ability to influence others to achieve a desired outcome, while politics is managing relationships and resources to achieve a goal. For example, our team leader had a strong sense of power and good political skills, which helped to effectively manage the team's resources and set clear goals and objectives. It helped keep the team focused and motivated, leading to increased productivity and achieving the team's goals. Additionally, team members who were politically savvy helped to build alliances, negotiate compromise, and advocate for the team's needs and interests, leading to a more cohesive and effective team. Furthermore, power and politics helped create a team's accountability culture. Team members were more likely to take ownership of their actions and responsibilities when they were aware of the potential consequences of their actions. Therefore, power and politics can play a positive role in teams by providing clear leadership, facilitating decision-making, resolving conflicts, and creating a culture of accountability.   References: Robbins, S.
