Communication & Motivation: Personal Experience Michael Cuthbertson Colorado State University- Global Leading Teams in Organizations- ORG400 Instructor- Laurie BarnesDecember 22nd, 2022 Communication & Motivation: Personal Experience I have participated in several teams throughout my academic and professional career, and one of the most memorable was a student-led organization focused on community service and sustainability. While the team was highly motivated and dedicated to making a positive impact, there were some challenges related to communication and motivation that we needed help with. In this essay, I will assess the team's current or previous state of communication and motivation and present a plan to develop the team focusing on these areas. To begin with, I assess the current state of communication and motivation on the team by conducting a survey or focus group to gather feedback from team members (Lopez, 2018). It would allow me to identify any communication breakdowns or lack of motivation affecting the team's performance. Based on the results of this assessment, I would implement the following development activities: Team-building exercises: Team-building exercises are a great way to improve communication and motivation by fostering a sense of trust and collaboration among team members (Robinson & Robinson, 2020). I would choose problem-solving, communication, and teamwork activities, such as group challenges or role-playing scenarios (Zenger & Folkman, 2016). These exercises help team members better understand each other's strengths and weaknesses and build the skills and confidence needed to work effectively. Communication training: Another development activity that I would implement is communication training. Effective communication is essential for team success, and it is vital to regularly review and practice communication skills such as active listening, assertiveness, and conflict resolution (Zenger & Folkman, 2016). I would work with a professional trainer or facilitator to design and deliver workshops or sessions focusing on these skills. The goal of this training would be to help team members improve their communication skills and to create a more positive and supportive team culture. Conduct regular team meetings: I would schedule weekly team meetings to discuss the progress of the project and any challenges faced. These meetings would provide a platform for team members to share their work, ask for feedback, and clarify doubts (Locke & Latham, 2002). The meetings would also serve as a way to establish open communication and foster a sense of collaboration among team members. Encourage active listening: I would conduct a training session on active listening, focusing on the importance of listening to what others say and showing genuine interest in their ideas and concerns (Zhou, Chen, & Fan, 2016). Active listening can help improve communication by reducing misunderstandings and conflicts and promoting a culture of respect and inclusivity within the team. Implement a team communication charter: I would work with the team to create a communication charter that outlines the expectations and norms for communication within the team. The charter would include guidelines on how team members should communicate, such as using clear and concise language, respecting each other's opinions, and being open to feedback (Locke & Latham, 2002). The charter would serve as a reference point for team members to follow and help create a culture of effective communication within the team. Employee recognition program: Finally, I would implement an employee recognition program to improve motivation on the team. Research has shown that recognition and appreciation are critical drivers of employee motivation and engagement (Lopez, 2018). We can create a more positive and motivating work environment by regularly recognizing and rewarding team members for their contributions (Robinson & Robinson, 2020). I would design and implement a program that includes various forms of recognition, such as verbal praise, certificates, or small rewards (Zenger & Folkman, 2016). The goal of this program would be to foster a culture of appreciation and support and to motivate team members to continue working hard and achieving their best. I would implement a team bonding session. Research has shown that team bonding activities can improve team cohesion, trust, and communication (Zhou, Chen, & Fan, 2016). I plan a team bonding session, such as a team-building exercise or a recreational activity, to encourage team members to interact and get to know each other better. It would create a sense of camaraderie and foster a positive team culture. In conclusion, communication and motivation are crucial factors in the success of any team; by assessing the current state of these factors on our team, implementing development activities such as team-building exercises, communication training, and an employee recognition program, implementing regular team meetings, encouraging active listening, and creating a communication charter. We can improve communication within our team. Additionally, we can increase motivation and performance by conducting team bonding activities and setting clear goals. We can improve communication and motivation and enhance the overall effectiveness of our team. References Lopez, M. (2018). The importance of employee recognition in the workplace. Forbes.
