Question.1175 - What is racial profiling?Does the potential risk to public safety ever justify racial profiling? What are the two sides to the arguments for and against profiling in policing?

Answer Below:

What is racial profiling? The discriminatory practices by the officials of law enforcement targeting individuals merely for the suspicion of criminal activities due to their race, religion, national origin, or ethnicity is termed as racial profiling.  Does the potential risk to public safety ever justify racial profiling? What are the two sides to the arguments for and against profiling in policing? Racial profiling is seen as a discriminatory and unethical practice as it involves decisions based on the ethnicity or race of an individual, raising serious concerns about justice, equality, and fairness. The potential risk of racial profiling does not justify racial profiling as it may bring conflict with the protections of the Constitution against seizures and searches under the Fourth Amendment and equal protection under the law against the Fourteenth Amendment.  However, racial profiling can be justified under potential risk to the safety of the public. Law enforcement has the right to use all available information to address securing concerns, including race, to prevent any kind of criminal activity. Racial profiling can also be justified for national security and the prevention of crime. If the target groups are associated with some kind of criminal activity, they might be a threat to national security. They are subjected to getting searched and arrested, and racial profiling will be justifiable.
