Devoted to the understanding of knowledges produced in everyday life, the theory is focused on how a community of people in communication and practices comes to construct a shared view of the world. This shared view of the world, which is made of multifaceted and often oppositional knowledge about surrounding social objects and people, organises and guides the relationship communities have amongst themselves and with others. These knowledges are never detached from the concrete social and historical contexts from which they emerge. On the contrary, they are organically linked to the cultural traditions, the social identities and the material conditions of living of a community. In this sense they are not only lay knowledge ‘about something’; they are also expressive of how communities hand down, sustain and negotiate their cultural identities, ways of life and strategies for survival and living.
