Question.589 - JW 9: Nomos and physis

Answer Below:

To have a brief understanding, the concept of nomos and physis has been derived from ancient Greek philosophy, where it pertains to a particular law or norm that was followed in a way that customs are followed. During the when problems in mitigation of control in politics in accordance with the citizen's rights and the state's obligation prevailed, leading to being a major concern to Greek sophists. This was when the concepts of nature were so-referred to as physis and convention referred to as nomos; this pushed the law of authority behind. The primary difference is physis represents growth being the crux of anything, such as the natural form that paves the way for nature. On the other hand, nomos is the custom that has the authority of the natural form of how human behavior is perceived. Some the philosophers like Plato has proclaimed reasoning is the crux of nomos, where interchangeable standards of ethical behavioral conduct could be an expression of law. Considering the identical notion, using nomos to assess the ethical custom, Antigone is hit by the reasoning values, were to abide by the custom that had been followed the state that was set by Creon, or bury her brother, physis plays a vital role here in human behavior where Antigone tends to defy the custom, the tragedy tries to imply the self-invented passion as one of the characters, were self know passion is the essence as physis with factual autonomia, where humans were forced to develop the ability to give themselves to the system of law, abide by the custom with the perception that it is real. Antigone tends to depict the character of a person who does not sacrifice the ethical values. These three characters appear to be inspired by positive motives and to adhere to the ideals instilled in them by their culture, euboulia excellent discernment, independence, and accountability. But unfortunately, every individual is stuck by an unshakeable faith in exactly on of these ideals, isolating them in an ultimate ethical realm. Creon appeals for a democratic sense of camaraderie in the tragedy, Ismene for a submissive emotion of philia acquainted love for the city and community toward which they adhere, and Antigone for a devout vindication of religious divine vs governmental rules. Antigone is torn between burying her brother and following the regulations imposed by her relative, Creon, the new leader of society. In order to commemorate her slain brother, she eventually resolves to reject Creon's decision, despite the practically definite repercussions. Creon, who Sophocles compares to the commander of a vessel in a storm, must create accommodation for his niece or he would appear as a poor leader in a time of great civil unrest. Ismene, Antigone's sister, tries but fails, to balance the extreme views of these two main characters, the libertarian and the monarch. To conclude, while everyone would prefer to escape disaster in their lives, having the strength to confront it is what defines us as humans and exposes the frailty of our moral standards. In order to relate ethical dilemma, during the pandemic situation, there lived a couple in the house next door; although there was a restriction on unnecessary stepping out, the old fella next door had a syndrome where if he stayed home isolated for a long time, he will develop a seizure that could be fatal to him. So I was left with a choice to either ignore, stay home without being a host of the virus or step up and be a responsible citizen. The choice of staying more ignoring the old fella depicts nomos, abiding by the concept of law, as custom followed by everyone and anyone, while on the other hand physis being the very principle of growth, I stepped out spending time with him, every day till the restriction was uplifted, this depicts the change in nature as an element of ethical growth, where the choice is made as Antigone, breaking the custom.
