Question.500 - Chapter 5: You want to be more engaged in, and motivated by, school; you feel the most competent and engaged in... and wish more time was spent on…and Reading Reaction #5 The first page is a self-reflection, a response to a prompt or “chapter title” I provide in which you write one or more stories from your educational journey (that you are comfortable writing about). This week's chapter title is: "You want to be more engaged in and motivated by school; you feel the most competent and engaged in... and wish more time was spent on…" The overall topic for next class is: What is and What isn’t being taught, what is important to students (eg. climate change, injustice), school funding and extra-curricular programs The second page is a reaction to the readings that week (which might include somethings to read or watch or listen to). The goal of these Reading Reactions is to help further your understanding and thoughts related to the ideas addressed in the readings. These should include quotes you found significant, questions the readings raised for you, lists of words perhaps that convey your reactions, responses or questions you might have for the authors and how the reading connects to the topic for the week as well as the guiding questions for the semester.

Chapter 5 Assignment Student Name University Name EDUC 417 School and Society Professor Name Date You want to be more engaged in, and motivated by, school; you feel the most competent and engaged in... and wish more time was spent on A school atmosphere involves its own facilities, practices, health supports, and, lastly and more importantly, terms and policies. Since the school environment is responsible for the growth of the students, the surroundings or the vibe of the environment should be positive and motivational. As per my experience, the school or classroom environment should be healthy and filled with encouragement so that students will be more motivated to learn things. Whether the teachers are aware or not aware, the school involves a competitive environment, but it should be healthy, unlike the competition of the corporate world. The school where I studied had a friendly culture in classrooms, which means I observed the rate of interaction on a daily basis between students and teachers. Most of my class teachers were very positive when they were talking or teaching. They always motivated us to learn in a different way by asking questions doubts and sharing ideas and opinions with others. We usually used to have a discussion often in the class after once a chapter was completed. Our teachers created teams within the class and arranged quiz competitions where we all read the textbook one day before that quiz and created questions on ourselves and asked them during the quiz play. The team which used to win gets a prize from the teacher. This was my favorite part of the class because asking questions excites me. I used to read and collect questions that others wouldnt have minded reading them. For instance, a chapter includes some interesting points in a small box of the page, like somewhere in a corner, especially in a science subject. To be honest, I used to read more for this quiz conducted in the class compared to reading for tests and exams. Apart from the quizzes, our teacher welcomed to discuss anything that is related to the subject we read outside the textbook or any magazine or tv. I had a classmate and I still remember him who used to watch some tv channels related to scientific research. He shared a lot of things and I loved how he was passionate about learning new things. I believe this kind of environment should be involved in each classroom because this encourages students read more and share them with their classmates. This culture of learning has two significant benefits, one is that students learn from others by listening and another one is they learn to share information and gives an understanding that we should grow by also helping others to grow. Besides, all these teach a student about behavior, equality, building personality by watching how others are doing in class. In addition, I am very proud that I had such teachers, which of them mostly tried to create a positive culture within the class by treating everyone equally. They used to give the same attention to a student who is weak at a subject as they focused on building a talented student in that class. I never heard them scolding those students who got fewer grades but they used to ask whether they had problems in understanding concepts in the class. Well, I was one of such student groups. I used to score very less for a few subjects. But my teacher called me and talked to me personally and this actually motivated me. That was a great experience to be around such great teachers and thanks for them for helping me from basic to build my career and personality. Almost two articles focus on how the sports section is not that focused in the education system of the United States of America. According to the report of Newberry (2021), In 2018, 38% of kids ages 6 to 12 played an organized sport on a regular basis, down from 45% in 2008 mainly due to increasing costs, time commitments and the hypercompetitive nature of many sports. This failure of educational organizations to introduce sports in their system might have various reasons like they need to pay more tax to the government but the government and educational organizations had to do something with it. Otherwise, talented players will stay behind even though our country has many great players to play at the international level. I believe educating a student means it is not only teaching particular subjects but encouraging them to learn in which they are actually interested in like sports, art, music, dance, etc. Another thing that took my attention from this weeks class reading is about the funding issues due to the pandemic situation. With the pandemic already causing so many difficulties across schools and in peoples lives, the last thing that should happen is for schools to face additional economic uncertainty, said State Superintendent Thurmond (CDE, 2022). Well, everyone is facing difficulties after the consequences that are brought by pandemic days. This has given a big slap to all kinds of business across the world and now, especially in the education system is changing completely. For instance, one thing that we can say is both parents and educational organizations are in a loss. Parents or students are experiencing more difficulty paying as they have become extremely weak after the spread of the corona virus and the same condition with the schools and colleges. But the question is, who is going to resolve this difficult situation of the country? Who will take responsibility for funding to schools and colleges so that students will not face any hurdles in their education career? Personally, I am concerned and worried about how students in the future will learn without any disturbances and can educational organizations reduce their fees or offer discounts so that it will help students, especially those who are financially not strong enough to pay for their education? I think this is going to be a big issue if it is not considered and focused on by the country soon. In my opinion, this situation can be resolved if there is proper funding but where can these sources be found? Apart from this, the new system that has become a trend nowadays, online teaching and learning, is definitely a good option to run the education process without any hindrances. But is it effective as face to face learning system? I think those kids who are going to join the school from now on will be unaware of socialism as they sit in front of the computer and learn. I think the interaction between students and teachers is not going to be that big issue but there wont be much connection. We know that attendance in school is critical because a student has to be in class to learn, but when students are facing trauma, economic uncertainly, or dangerous routes to school, the simple act of showing up to class isnt so simple, said Kelly Gonez, President of the Los Angeles Unified School Districts Board of Education (CDE, 2022). This is true if we consider the present case of virus spread. Parents are still scared to send their kids to schools as there is still fear of the virus. Even though the students are attending classes, there have been new rules like keeping distance from one another in the class makes it more stressful. This is because bringing students to schools aims to give them a real feel of learning where they play, learn, and have fun with others. These implemented rules to isolate individuals even though they are in the same room. CDE, (2022).
