Question.497 - Chapter 2: You Feel Like you Belong as a Learner…or not. (You wonder if you learn differently.) and Reading Reaction #2 The first page is a self-reflection, a response to a prompt or “chapter title” I provide in which you write one or more stories from your educational journey (that you are comfortable writing about). This week's chapter title is "You Feel Like You Belong as a Learner...or not. (You wonder if you learn differently.) The overall topic for next class is different learning environments, so reflect on time(s) you understood what was happening in the class or not, how the teacher was teaching, what was expected of you, when you felt "smart" or had a sense of self-efficacy (or not). The second page is a reaction to the readings that week (which might include somethings to read or watch or listen to). The goal of these Reading Reactions is to help further your understanding and thoughts related to the ideas addressed in the readings. These should include quotes you found significant, questions the readings raised for you, lists of words perhaps that convey your reactions, responses or questions you might have for the authors and how the reading connects to the topic for the week as well as the guiding questions for the semester.
Answer Below:
Chapter 2 Assignment Student Name University Name EDUC 417 School and Society Professor Name Date You Feel Like you Belong as a Learner&or not. (You wonder if you learn differently.) Belongingness and connection feel like two strong words for me as I have experienced a lot in the past school days. Basically, I was an introvert, the one who did not use to open his mouth but observed quietly like a moon behind that dark night. My school principal even told my parents to take me to a physician because he felt I had a problem with my speaking ability. But the school environment was pretty cool back in those days. Well, I was not that connected with class friends, but one or two were always around me. For a students sense of belonging in the school, his/her mental well-being, academic and parents motivation, and personality are crucial. Personally, I was moderate in studies, and I never liked sitting inside four closed walls. I wished I could have explored and learned something from outside that is practical. A sense of belongingness comes when a person is genuinely interested in or passionate about something. Well, the school environment was excellent, which had more than enough that a school usually should have a big classroom, library, experienced teachers, vast playground, greenery, and toys. What else a student wants? Of course, it was kind of exciting to learn new things every year new and on the other hand, I did not miss passing the subjects. But I learned more about being empathetic, honest, organized, disciplined, helpful, and more importantly, I was inspired to be a good learner. I always liked to read books other than my class notes and analyze how it can be related to my life. I believe the education system should give additional lessons that can be helpful to students build their careers after their studies. In my opinion, struggle to find the studies is on one side and finding a job that suits to our particular field of study is at the next level. It is common for students or children to feel like they do not belong to studies or they cannot study totally when they score really low. But I do not believe learning only belongs to the reading elements of school. Lessons come from all directions for instance, we learn from parents, siblings, friends, strangers, relationships, failures, winnings, social media, news, and of course, teachers. I was always pondering about learning even though I scored average in schools because I felt the potential inside me. In my opinion, the education should be in this way a student should choose the particular section or field which he likes more to spend time on and wont get bored. For instance, a student interested in a particular game can choose the study path that helps him grow in terms of skillsets necessary for the particular game. If a student is interested in drawing or painting, a school should have a special classroom for them. This is because that individual becomes an expert from childhood. I feel like I belong as a learner because I am still learning. I believe implementing what we have learned from back in the school days (as courses) is as essential as getting good grades. In addition, the lifestyle that I have today is all from the learnings of what my teachers and friends have shown me, even though I got warnings for my mistakes in the class. However, that is common but what I have learned from then is vital today. I have become a good citizen and still perceiving my higher studies. Green (2021) writes, Like schools across the country, liberty has seen the damaging effects of a two-year pandemic that abruptly ejected millions of students from classrooms and isolated them from their peers as they weathered a historic convergence of academic, health, and societal crises. This isolation caused by the pandemic negatively impacted the students social and emotional state and so did their learning. Generally, a school means a place with some rules which treat everyone equally. But the pandemic made the school administrators implement additional rules like maintaining distance and wearing masks. Such conditions made students made more frustrated because they lost their liberty in the school environments so did the learning freedom with interacting freely. I liked an article to the utmost which states, Education has the capability and obligation, I believe, of speaking to every issue of what it means to be human (Shapiro, 2016) Definitely, the education system is established to teach human beings how to handle situations as we all have enough potential to explore and learn. But just learning six to seven subjects in each year of school is enough to survive in life? I always wonder whether it is possible for the education system to teach students to teach something that can give them the strength to solve real-life problems. However, a teacher cannot give an exact solution because who knows what comes next in someones life. But the education system can give such training that makes each student face their life courageously. I am concerned about this because I have heard about the suicide cases, which I believe is wrong. I remember my school days, outside of the class, I was an independent learner. I like hearing peoples life stories because they either have real problems or success stories. Hattie, (2021) says, My colleagues and I have used the Visible Learning research base to write books about how to teach when students are not physically in front of us. But, does this really work? I mean learning virtually. Well, this is maybe suitable for the current situation of the Covid, but I believe there is different fun and experience in learning face-to-face interaction environment. For instance, let us say a person is only sitting within four walls and does not want to explore the outside world, how is that possible to teach from reality? Because I believe a person can only learn when they experience or face reality. Regarding constructivist teaching, does it suits for every kind of student and does it becomes effective for the students to be self-independent in terms of understanding and gaining knowledge in the initial stage of learning? In todays world of advanced science and technology, students need to be molded and grown at the same pace to get accustomed to the high pace lifestyle. Earlier, due to a lack of technology, students were not as advanced as they are now. A small kid gets all the understanding and operation of a mobile phone before getting admitted to the school. This is the reason why the students need to be more advanced and experienced when it comes to the learning process. As the author states, Educators must invite students to experience the worlds richness, empower them to ask their own questions and seek their own answers, and challenge them to understand the worlds complexities (Brooks & Brooks, 1999). I think this is exactly how educational institutions should work. Nowadays, the students depend more on the internet and electronic gadgets that they dont put their own effort to research something on their own. Every information or source they get access to very easily and this is also harming them and stopping them from becoming self-reliant. No doubt the internet has made the lives of the students easier, but these days, with the advancement of speed, students rely basically on the internet to complete their academic tasks. Therefore, the teachers should ask the students to think differently and put their own judgments regarding any topic of their study. When the students develop their cognitive skills, they will think differently and interpret ideas in their own way and that process will be the most productive one. Works Cited Brooks, J.
