Question.499 - Chapter 4: You aren’t sure there is another adult to talk to about what’s really go on with you and Reading Reaction #4 The first page is a self-reflection, a response to a prompt or “chapter title” I provide in which you write one or more stories from your educational journey (that you are comfortable writing about). This week's chapter title is "You aren’t sure there is another adult to talk to about what’s really go on with you". The overall topic for next class is: Support Structures and Supportive Adults, Social-emotional learning and Coping with Crises like the Pandemic, so consider the people and maybe structures or resources in your schooling that supported you socially and emotionally, and with your mental health needs. The second page is a reaction to the readings that week (which might include somethings to read or watch or listen to). The goal of these Reading Reactions is to help further your understanding and thoughts related to the ideas addressed in the readings. These should include quotes you found significant, questions the readings raised for you, lists of words perhaps that convey your reactions, responses or questions you might have for the authors and how the reading connects to the topic for the week as well as the guiding questions for the semester.

Chapter 4 Assignment Student Name University Name EDUC 417 School and Society Professor Name Date You arent sure there is another adult to talk to about whats really go on with you For many students, it is pervasive getting into mental trauma, overthinking, emotionally weak. This is because of the situations like being bullied, ashamed, feeling not being good as classmates in terms of learning skills, or body shaming etc. Such experiences really bring students down and even keep them away from learning ability. I personally have not experienced much but there are few cases where I really needed someone to talk and someone to hear me when I was in 6th grade. I was totally an introvert and all of my classmates were seemed so active and extroverted. One of them spread some news which I have not understood till now and a whole group of my friends stopped talking to me. Well, after that, I lost my confidence, thinking that I might have made a mistake. I started sitting and studying alone but that thing always revolved around my head. I was an average student in the class and I was favorite student of my English teacher. Although I never found anyone to share things with but instead, I was learning things and becoming better at staying alone and working alone. After going back home, I experienced the same loneliness since my parents had a very busy life. But I am truly respectful for them as they provided me all the facilities and fulfilled my needs before I asked, but at the same time, I never shared anything with them. As time passed and I was moving to the next stage of my education life, I was proud of myself for how I was building my personality, and definitely, there are few teachers in my life who helped me by always encouraging me and being on my side. I remember one saying by Karl Meninger "What the teacher is, is more important than what he teaches." I believe this because a teacher is responsible for keeping track on how her/his student is doing with studies apart from subject-vice teaching. I am very proud of being a student of theirs because it is not that they only liked me or motivated me to become a good student with a great personality but they used to take care of others too. I think they knew what it is to be an ideal teacher. It is mostly rare how teachers take responsibility for building their students' personalities by involving and interacting with students personally. When students go through mental trauma, they usually have two options to share with: parents and teachers because those are the ones with whom they spend more time. As I went through a short period of depression, I knew I wanted someone to listen more than hearing to suggestions on how to deal with it. So, any kid facing such conditions requires emotional support from someone adult who can understand what exactly the kid is going through. Whatever situations I have gone through till today, I have tried to take them as positive lessons. So, in the future, I want to start something where I can connect to people and start listening to their stories, try to understand them and console and provide mental support as much as I can. In my life experience, I have seen people who look rude on the outer surface, but they are actually good from inside and I think I was that kind of person when I was in school days. This happened to me when I completely stopped talking to people and even my cousins observed this behavior complained to my parents. However, this is not a person's fault and getting into mental trauma has become common in these days but it is simple only if the person comes out of it. The primary thing that health condition demands is someone who can support emotionally to improve mental wellbeing. On the other hand, Susan Craig talks about how adults who work as teachers and professors go into trauma like burnout and how trauma impacts students' learning skills and brain functions with neurology concepts. Craig (2017) defines, "Trauma involves exposure to experiences that exceed one's capacity to cope." In students, this influence reduces students' capacity to build neural connectivity and executive functioning. I agree entirely with Susan Craig here because when one loses self-capacity from inside, how can it be active from the outer surface? Authors like Fialk (2020) talks about how students are undergoing mental stress and what the causes are throughout their discussion but they don't give particular suggestions on how to reduce such issues in the school environment since it is growing without pause in this contemporary era. The author could have added a part on what kind of programs can be introduced in schools to keep students in a safe place. Fialk (2020) writes, "Our public officials can and must do better. It is imperative that they thoughtfully create plans that stick so as to preserve the sanctity of this central and important relationship in the lives of young people. Our decisions and policies matter." Indeed, but my question to Susan is what type of policies? I believe school is the important and primary place to build all types of skills and abilities for a student. But what's happening around the world, especially due to pandemic situations? Schools are made to teach a student how to behave and learn technical skills and various subjects throughout the year, followed by developing personality, social attitude, and emotional intelligence. Overall, a school is responsible for making a student strong in all ways. But Failk demonstrates how the youth generation is leaving high school without the elements and tools required in the future to spend and face situations. On the other hand, the author explains in brief, "departments of education should reserve funds to develop and infuse long-term, mandatory, and sustainable social-emotional learning classes into the day-to-day fabric of the required school curriculum and culture (Failk, 2021)." I liked the article "Why Social-Emotional Learning Belongs in School Curriculums" because the author mentions the importance of giving attention to the social and emotional learning necessity of students (Failk, 2021). I totally agree that students should have emotional and social stability because their physical health depends on those factors. In other words, if a person is not well internally, as per the psychology theories, the physical health of that person gets ruined as well. Today, due to the pandemic, the education system has turned to virtual classrooms and this has become the trend for most famous and prestigious schools and colleges. This way of education will again impact the student more as this will keep students from meeting other students of their age and interacting with them. This way of teaching also reduces the effective student and teacher interaction rate. A person sometimes mentally goes weak when he/she starts spending time alone. Socialism is only possible when two or more interact with each other to share and express individuals' opinions and ideas. Works Cited Craig, S. E.
