Artificial Intelligence is the future in the automotive industry. While the GPS trackers are already used in numerous vehicles, innovative features such as driverless cars and electric vehicles are the new additions in this industry. Tesla has long been the pioneer in incorporating artificial intelligence in its vehicles. The textbook mentions that the company has been a forerunner in the driverless cars being tested along with Google and Apple (pp. 171, Grant & Meadows, 2012). An article that I came across related to the contents of the textbook from chapter 13: Automotive Telematics is that Apple has taken back its launch of electric vehicle with self-drive features (Chen, 2024). The company has been working on this project discreetly for the last one decade. But it has now decided to scrap the project and transfer the employees of its department elsewhere in the organization. This is a huge setback to Apple who is c a pioneer in the technology sector and was being considered as giving a tough competition to Tesla if it comes up with an automated vehicle in the market. Tesla has made numerous innovations in the automation of its vehicles and has successfully launched many on road. It seems Apple was struggling in developing the product with the shutting down of many of its divisions. It is rather a very strange development given that the company had been conducting numerous trials on-road. I found the article interesting as Apple has always been considered as a company that is pioneer in innovative technology. The move would have led to people quashing the perception that CEO Tim Cook has lost its ability to lead the company to new innovations. However, the news of Apple scrapping its automated vehicle is very disappointing. I admire all Apple products and had been looking forward to it launching its own vehicles with the self-drive features.
