Question.452 - What is the Realism Movement? Explain how Realism came about and what were the major themes and ideals portrayed. Include an artwork as an example to discuss.

Answer Below:

Realism movement is a reaction towards Romantic age where the themes only revolved around royalty, king, queen and the mythological figures. Realism movement is contrary to these movements where the main subject of the painters was common people and their ordinary life routine. The realist artists portrayed the real life where both positive and negative aspects of human life have been depicted. The realist artists were not limited to one particular theme or aspect which is opposite to the other artistic movements. This artistic movement flourished during the mid of eighteenth century and continued till nineteenth century. Realism rejected the idea of idealism rather they focused on the reality of contemporary life. The themes of this movement revolved around the life of common people where the poor and middle class people were taken into consideration and their predicament were put into the form of painting. The artists painted the reality without any ornamentation or embellishment rather the portrayal is very raw and natural that brings the authenticity in their work. Gustave Courbet initiated the artistic movement of realism and it was followed by other chief artists like Jean-Francois Millet, Honore Daumier.
