Question.4919 - Journal: Reading to LearnFor this week's journal you will be reflecting on your own reading strategies as a student. We are often used to reading in order to memorize or repeat information at a later time. For example, when we re-read a chapter or part of a book for an exam, we are reading with attention given to specific topics, facts, or with potential test questions in mind. However, we know that we are better able to retain information when we can connect what we are reading to a lived experience, another class, or something in our life that is easy for us to recall.I would like for you to describe the current reading strategies that you use when you are given a reading assignment. Do you highlight specific parts of the reading? Do you attempt to complete the reading assignment all in one sitting? Do you read better when you can hold the book or paper, or do you prefer to read on an electronic device? Then, spend some time sharing how you retain what you read. Do you take notes while reading? Do you review what you've read throughout the week? If you struggle to retain what you read, what are some strategies that you would like to implement this semester? For example, how can you connect the readings in this First Year Seminar course to other experiences or classes? How can you make time to review what you have read for your classes throughout the week? The purpose of this journal is to get you thinking and strategizing about how you can read to retain and later recall the information that you have read. Please contact your instructor with any questions.
