New era of policing After 9/11, American policing entered a new era of policing to respond to the threat of terrorism. Early American policing lacks the capacity to prevent crime due to poor investigation processes, and lack of personnel and communication skills. Enhanced intelligence-sharing networks were set up which allow local police to access data associated with probable threat of terrorism. State, local and federal law administration works collaboratively to deter and respond to terrorism by increasing training in counterterrorism and forming specialized units within the police divisions (LaFree, 2022). Homeland security was established in which local police played a key role in implementing the initiatives and focusing on securing the homeland. In addition, the police divisions also apportion resources to improve their ability to efficiently respond to terrorist actions by acquiring special technology as well as equipment. It is agreed that police have new responsibilities in terms of terrorism prevention and response after the 9/11 attack. The core duties of police are related to maintaining order, enhancing the efficacy of investigation, enforcing laws and serving their communities. American policing remains a complicated role and the officers are expected to balance the new duties with their traditional accountabilities. The police are required to acclimate to changes to legal needs related to data collection and surveillance for addressing security issues. The 9/11 era has changed the jobs of local police. The local police agencies are required to share their accountabilities in the mission of deterring as well as recognizing terrorist activities.
