Question.5123 - Module 12 Discussion: How is climate change going to affect California and what can we do about it? (Section A02)Assignment objective:Students will explore climate predictions for California compared to today's climate and discuss what we can do to prevent climate change from happeningConnection to module objectives:Assess the current state of climate change today and predict future climate impactsDiscuss ways to solve the climate crisisDescription:Climate change is already happening and having real world impacts that affect everyone. The intense wildfires that have affect California in recent years are just one good example of this. Climate scientists engage in climate prediction to help us understand where we are headed and let us know how things could be different if we take action now. Climate prediction involves creating sophisticated computer models of how Earth's climate system works, then changing certain variables (such as how much carbon dioxide we emit into the atmosphere) and seeing what will happen in the future. In this assignment, you are going to look at climate predictions for California using "The Climate Explorer."Links to an external site. Among other things, this website lets you use interactive maps of the US to see the difference between climate now and what it is predicted to be like in 2090 (or another decade of your choosing).Using Climate Explorer to learn what the future holds for CaliforniaGo to "The Climate Explorer"Links to an external site. website. In the main search bar, enter the city you live. It should take you to a new dashboard with several ways of viewing climate predictions. Click on "Climate Maps" in the upper left corner. This takes you to a map of the Bay Area. Zoom out a bit so you can see the entire state of California. In the upper left corner, there's a drop-down menu bar that's currently displaying "Average Daily Maximum Temp (F)". What this means is that the map shows the average high temperature in each part of the state. You will also notice there's a scroll bar in the center of the screen, and that the colors look different on either side. The right-hand-side displays climate predictions for 2090, while the left hand side shows the average using all data from 1961-1990 (see lower left corner). You can change the prediction year by using the scroll bar in the lower right.Click on this menu bar and choose a different option. To learn what each means, hover your cursor over the "?" next to it. Pick one that you'd like to know about. After all, this is your future!Once you have made your selection, the map will change colors. Look at the color bar on the left hand side of the map. What do the colors mean? Move the scroll bar from side to side and evaluate the difference between California's climate in the recent past and the climate that's predicted for 2090. What's your assessment? How will California's future climate be different from today? Take a screenshot of the state of California's climate in the recent past (with the scroll bar to the right side of the map), then take another of the predicted climate in 2090 (with the scroll bar to the left side of the map). What will the impacts of this change be? Brainstorm some ways this change will matterThink about what needs to happen to avoid this future. What do we need to do as a society and as a country? What can you do as an individual to help make this happen?Steps:Here's how to format your discussion post:Tell us what climate prediction data you are investigating (e.g., "Dry days" or "Days with maximum temp > 100 F")Include a screenshot of current climate and one of predicted climate in 2090. Make sure you resize them so they aren't too big or too small, and so that they are labelled and placed near one another so it's easy to compare the twoAssess what your maps tell us about how climate in California will be different in 2090. Then tell us what you think some of the impacts of this difference will be and why it matters. Finally, speak from the heart about what you think we need to do as a society and as a country to avoid this future. Tell us what you can do as an individual to help bring these changes about. I'm really not looking for AI-generated fluff here—I want to hear your honest, unvarnished thoughts.Visit two other classmate's posts where they looked at climate predictions different than the one you looked at. Tell them what you learned and respond thoughtfully to their ideas about what we can do to avoid this future. How this assignment will be graded:This assignment is worth 60 pts. The post itself is worth 30 pts, and your responses to your classmates' posts are worth 15 pts each.
