Question.2972 - What is the difference between a scatter plot and a line graph? Provide an example of each. Does one seem better than the other? In what ways is it better?

Answer Below:

Line graph is the process of mapping one independent and dependent variable that are expressed in quantitative terms. It is a graph that connects data points while expressing the change in data over a given period of time. For example, line graph may be used to express the change of a person’s annual taxable income over a given period of time, say 10 years. Here, the line graph may be used to express the change in a person’s taxable income over the given 10 years. In contrast scatter plot is a graphical representation of a pair of variables which is plotted in a coordinate plane which explains the relationship between the two variables. The movement of the two variables explains the relationship between them. It provides analysis whether the two variables have positive, negative or no correlation to one another. For example, if the test scores increase with the increase in the number of hours put into studies it shows a positive relationship between one another. So, the main difference between line graph and scatter plot is that while points are connected with a line in case of line graph on the other hand in case of scatter plot it is expressed in terms of a trend. In majority of the cases line graph is better than scatter plot as data is represented in a straight forward and clear manner. Line graph scores over scatter plots as it reduces the chances of clutter. There is less scope for confusion in scatter plot. Line graph can therefore, be considered as a better representation of data than scatter plot. References Icoachmath.com. (n.d.). Scatter Plot.
