Question.5055 - The Sociological Imagination and Social Causes of SuicideDiscussionRequired ResourcesRead/review the following resources for this activity:Textbook: Chapter 1Module: Week 1 LessonStudent-chosen scholarly sourceInitial Post InstructionsSociologist C. Wright Mills preferred to call the sociological perspective the sociological imagination, and he saw it transforming personal troubles into public issues. Let us begin our discussion this week by considering suicide, which is thoroughly explored in your textbook reading for this week. For the initial post, respond to one of the following options, and label the beginning of your post indicating either Option 1 or Option 2:Option 1: Do a little digging: What resources are there in your state or local community for suicide prevention? Are the resources adequate, in your view? Why or why not? How does the sociological imagination help you decide whether or not the resources are adequate?Option 2: Is this a "downer" topic to start a course or a textbook? If so, how would you explain the sociological imagination to a friend, in a different way? If not, why is this an important topic to help you learn about the sociological imagination?Your initial post must contain scholarly support by citing an assigned reading (the textbook/lesson) and an outside scholarly source that you identify on your own.Follow-Up Post InstructionsRespond to at least one peer. With a little digging I found a hotline where you can call or text 988 to get help. " 988 serves as a universal entry point that no matter where you live in United States, you can reach a trained crisis counselor who can help, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week." (TEXAS Health and Human Services) There are also family and individual counseling that offers a safe confidential environment where you can express what is troubling you. All of these resources are free and easy to access but, the first step is actually seeking help, and that is always the hard part. The resources for mental health are adequate but are not widely known because of the stigma but on it by the older generation or that you don't want anyone to know. Mental health is just as important as physical health so everyone should get a checkup, like your annual physical. But, in these past few years, seeking help for mental illnesses and help has increased because more and more people are speaking out about it. The stigma that was once surrounded by it is starting to lose its weight. There are online options, even schools have a program that gives kids free counseling no matter what they are dealing with.
