Question.3514 -  Which dance was most appealing to you and why? - Make a list of at least 8 descriptive action verbs paired with modifying adverbs for the dance that you are most drawn to. This focuses on ACTION and ENERGY from the BASTE method described in chapter 2 of our text. Examples include swiftly leaping, quickly spinning, softly sinking, frantically kicking, and carefully balancing.  - Use the BASTE method to write 2 or 3 full paragraphs describing the dance you chose in detail. This means you will describe Body (what body parts or shapes), Action (verbs! what are the bodies doing?), Space (what type of space are the dancers in and how do they relate to the space or others in the space?), Time (musicality, tempo), and Effort/Energy (how are they performing the actions?). When writing your description, please also consider how the dance changes over time (beginning, middle, to end). Use your action verb pairs in your narrative!

Answer Below:

I came across the videos and found Sia’s performance on “Elastic Heart” to be the most compelling. The dance in the music video was a mixture of contemporary and interpretive dance styles. It also involved a series of emotional intensities being conveyed through each and every movement. This is what, according to me, makes the dance stand out. I found this so appealing that I pulled out a list of descriptive action verbs: Resisting Fiercely Fluidly shifting Reaching aggressively Spinning rapidly Tightly gripping Gradual unravelling Wildly thrashing Trembling   The dancers in the video of “Elastic Heart” create a visceral and visually captivating scene as they start the dance by vehemently opposing each other’s moves that creates an apparent tension. They tend to hold hands tightly, by gripping and grasping aggressively in an attempt to maintain control over their bodies which are in a constant state of push and pull. The dancers are shown to move fluidly, thereby not staying in the same for too long and the space between them is seen to be infused with energy (McLaine, 2018). The music’s fast and slow beats are alternatives that guide the movements of the performers. The dancers’ fast and frenzied spinning adds to the piece’s sense of intensity when the music picks up speed. The energy tends to change during the course of the dance from a condition of extreme resistance to one of introspection and emotion. The dancers gradually detach from each other, their motions becoming less forceful and more fluid. They move away from one another and occupy more space on the stage, symbolizing a letting go scene or release. Even after they part ways, there’s still a faint shudder in their steps, suggesting their feelings are holding them back and there needs to be work done to overcome them. From the ferocious writhing during the piece’s climax to the calm and collected steps as it nears its ending, the efforts and willingness of the dancers are apparent in every move (McLaine). The momentum had to shift once more during the last few minutes of the performance. They reunite, but this time their bond seemed to be more passionate and understanding. There lies a sense of peace and clarity between them, dismantling the moments of stress. As the dancers lean towards one another, their bodies relax and their movements become more deliberate and melodic. The music also becomes less intense, underlining the journey’s peaceful conclusion. As the dancers stand next to each other, slightly trembling from the residual momentum of their experiences together, yet unified in their final stance, the piece culminates in a striking image of oneness and understanding (McLaine).
