Question.5016 - ARTS 1301 – Art AppreciationThe Elements and the Principles AssignmentBefore you begin this assignment: Make sure you’ve read Chapter 4 and Chapter 5. Watch the supplemental video on the elements of art and principles of design. Read through the assignment worksheet carefully and let me know if you have any questions.OverviewThe elements of art are the building blocks artists use as they consider and decide how they will compose their works of art. The elements of art are line, shape, form, value, color, space, and texture. Although these elements may seem familiar and fairly straightforward, you should consider how each element plays a vital role in facilitating how we see, read, and understand the artworks we encounter this semester. If the elements of art are the building blocks of an artwork’s composition, the principles of design are the compositional strategies utilized by artists to govern how those building blocks will function within the composition. In order to determine which principles of design are at play within a selected artwork, one must identify and analyze the elements of art and their placement in an artwork. Each artist will determine how they will use the principles of design to “activate” the elements of art to create specific visual effects within their compositions. You may have noticed from the supplemental lectures that most of these elements and principles function differently depending on how an artist decides to compose their artwork. These choices often reveal the stylistic tendencies of an artist, art movement, and/or art period. There are no accidents in art; each artwork is a documentation of the artist’s decision-making process as they composed their works of art. This week’s assignment will require you to identify and label the elements of art and principles of design from an artwork of your choosing.Process You will visit the Google Arts and Culture website and select a two-dimensional artwork (painting or drawing) made during the Rococo period. You will download or screen-shot an image of the artwork. If you aren’t familiar with how to take a screenshot, google the following: “How do I screenshot from (add whatever device you’re working from)?” You will insert this image into a PowerPoint slide and list the artist’s name, the title of the artwork, the dimension (size) of the artwork, and its current location (city or museum) You will then identify and label the elements and principles listed below using the shape/line tool in PowerPoint. These tools are also available on Google Slides and Keynote but remember to convert your files to PowerPoint before submitting. Some elements will be addressed in the form of question and answer. Include responses in your slide. You will label each identified element and principle as illustrated in the sample PowerPoint attached at the top of this assignment prompt. You may use the sample slides as a template for your assignment. Each of the bullets below is worth 10 pts.Submit your PowerPoint or PDF assignment document by clicking on the header/title of the assignment prompt above. Elements of Art and Principles of Design Visual IdentificationYou will identify and label the elements listed below. Please keep this list in mind when you are selecting the artwork you’ll use for this assignment. Ask yourself: “Are the elements I’m required to identify present in the artwork I plan to analyze?”The information in parentheses is simply describing the qualities of the element or principle.Identify and label the following elements (chapter 4) and principles (chapter 5) from your selected artwork: One example of implied lineOne example of an implied shapeOne example of value (shift from light to dark)One example of texture (areas that suggest surface tactility); describe the texture.Color: What is the dominant color temperature of your selected artwork? Which hues informed your response?Color: What color harmonies are present in your artwork? (Analogous, monochromatic, complementary,). Is more than one color harmony present in your composition? Which hues informed your response. Identify and label an area of your composition that exemplifies unity Identify and label an area of your composition that exemplifies variety Identify an area of your composition that exemplifies rhythm and movement Identify and label an area of your composition that is emphasized As you work through this assignment, don’t forget to refer back to the textbook and videos if you get stuck.
